Fear and Respect; where do we draw the line

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of a calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMP)
It is said that a coward dies nine (9) times before his death. The Bible is replete with God’s admonition that we should not fear, to be bold and courageous. Again and again He says to us – “Fear not”. God said to Joshua in Joshua Chapter 1 verse 6 - ‘Be strong and of a good courage…’
Yet, there are some positives to be drawn from fear especially when we consider reverential fear. The Bible tells us in Philippians 2: 12, 13 to work out our Salvation with fear and trembling. In Psalms 2: 11, we are encouraged to ‘serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling’. In keeping God’s righteous instruction, it is important to fully understand what God is saying to his people.
On the other hand, Respect may seem to stem from reverential fear and awe. It is common to see children in Nigeria express their reverence for elders by calling them ‘Uncle’ or ‘Aunty’, some adults go further to call non-relations ‘Baba’ or ‘Mama’ where such persons are perceived to be elderly. Again in the church, the title of ‘Brother’, ‘Sister’, ‘Deacon’, ‘Pastor’ etc is often used before a name is called.
Are we required to say ‘Sir” to every senior officer at work or should age be the consideration?
Where do we draw the line? We also find Parents who set out to instill discipline and respect in their children but end up teaching them to fear. For most children in this part of the world, the appearance of a father would mean that it is time to escape or move away because of the threat of punishment. Well oiled relationships lead to a productive environment at church, at home, at work and at play.
In a culturally divergent society like ours, issues concerning respect and fear crop up on a daily basis. But we must find a safe path to thread amidst these seeming conflicts. There must be a balanced explanation to clarify the confusion. We must draw the Line.
